Autumn 2021
A dynamic competition where superior numbers rule
Spotted hyena are like shadows around African wild dogs, lurking to take advantage of the smaller pack animals’ exceptional hunting prowess. The hyenas will tail the dogs when they hunt and attempt to rob them of their kills or monopolise on scraps left behind. The wild dogs tolerate the lurkers when they pose little threat, but will retaliate when they feel they are overstepping reasonable boundaries. Wild dogs retain the upper hand when the larger hyenas are in low numbers, but when the hyenas reinforce their ranks, the wild dogs must risk injury in their defence or flee.
